C.H. Spurgeon

Sinners, let me address you with words of life; Jesus wants nothing from you, nothing whatsoever, nothing done, nothing felt; he gives both work and feeling. Ragged, penniless, just as you are, lost, forsaken, desolate, with no good feelings, and no good hopes, still Jesus comes to you, and in these words of pity he addresses you, "Him that cometh unto me I will in no wise cast out."

The Current of Love

The wind blows from whence it will
Flowing from its source rippling the still
A gentle touching upon the skin
Sharing the soft presence it lends
Tickling the smallest fibers of the face
A deep breath of its freshness embraced
A tear or two from an eye so moved
By the flowing of air lightly cooled
Giving of itself free without cost
Sometimes remains though the feeling is lost

So moves the heart of one to another
Giving love whether received from the other
It does not bestow that it may obtain
But rather desires the others' happiness remain
Offering of itself all that it has to present
Caring for the wellbeing of another it’s content
Always there whether known or secretly held
It remains faithful desiring to be felt
Quietly oft times it tenderly waits
Forever true with or without being embraced

The Struggle of Sorrows

When my heart so full of sorrows, has no words to say
There I find you by my side, here with me all the way
Though sometimes silent yet I feel, you appear to me
As one who does not really care, my hurt do you not see
I cry out to you for answers, with my tears I call on you
To take the pain and sorrow, to let me start anew
Why can I not revisit the past, to change what I have chose
Redo a choice and make another, go down a different road
Could not I save myself from such, such difficulties now
Escorted by my present wisdom, I surely would know how
I know our lives we live here, are entwined with one another
But why must smiles be granted them, while I myself do suffer
It seems they have their desires met, though mine do fade away
As quickly as the sun appears, the clouds block out its ray
Moments here and moments there, bits of hope seem to appear
Only to be found once more, tossed alone in darkness drear
I grasp at you to pull you close, to drag you in my direction
Why must I bear all my troubles, I beg for your protection
My spirit’s weak, my body’s worn, my mind so full of doubt
I desire to run from all I know, I simply just want out
I turn to you for one last glimpse, with nothing left inside
I feel as though I should fall away, but you pull me to your side
You carry me from whence I am, yet not to where I’ve been
Through my sorrows gently walk, to a place for me to mend
Why did I not look to you, was it for the tears within my eyes
Why could I not hear your voice, was it for my deafening cries
The depths of sorrow, oh my soul, I did let draw me away
My only savior through the vale, he now leads me on my way
I know the path will not be easy, for I have to take it slow
I must trust him in my sorrows, and follow where I should go
Just above the mountains, I can see the bright sun break
Through the darkness of the valley, I shall again one day partake
Then shall what my sorrows be, but a moment of my past
Of lessons learned and wisdom got, from pain that did not last
For through it do I pray to come, by faith and hope and love
Not by my own strength for sure, but by the one sent from above

Twisted Inside, Heart Against Mind

Twisted inside, heart against mind
Emotional turmoil, where fear does dine
Knowledge and wisdom, right and wrong
The mind rejects, the heart’s love song
Struggling, do they yet fight
As choices and costs, come to the light

Tears in the shadows, cries in the night
Hidden from other, people’s sight
Pain grips the soul, smothering breath
With a worn body, that finds no rest
Fighting the will, a desire to hold on
Afraid to let go, of being alone

The eyes see no other, the senses die
The season changes, now winter resides
Where the warmth, of spring once dwelt
Now covered in snow, with no sun to melt
The heart quivers, alone in the cold
Rebuked by the mind, for being so bold

How may one, just let love go
Stand there still, and let it flow
From the veins, of your very heart
As it pulls and tares, your whole being apart
How do you stop love, and survive the woe
While a part of the heart dies, as you let go

Tomorrow will come, and so will the next
Day after day, though the spirit still vexed
Consumed by sickness, some claim is benign
Learn to go on, a moment at a time
Seal up the heart, for the wounds to heal
Hide away forever, never again to reveal

For the anguish torments, deep down inside
In the void of silence, where joy did reside
Knowledge it’s gone, yet denial remains
The heart holds to hope, while the mind refrains
Logic and reason, strap the heart in submission
As love fades away, vanishing into remission

La Ciudad 2008 - A Poem of Testimony

Months of preparation, of heart and soul and mind
Meeting after meeting, making plans for our time
Cutting here, gluing there, string up a pole with fish
Punch a hole, bag the crafts, thanks for all the help with this
A piano tuned for music, taught us how to sing
A heart made just for children, imagined gospel schooling
Three young minds of prayer, eager to obey
Joined the great commission, shared Jesus every day
Men of honor joined in, the gospel to present
Leaving jobs and family, a witnessing they went
Natural was the appearance, even some faces refused to shave
Kept in line by two mothers, to ensure we all behaved
The gift of tongues displayed, by one’s native birthright
Translation of English into Spanish, souls embraced the Light
Through Bible stories, songs of praise, memory verses too
Puppets, crafts, tracts and video, the light of Christ shined through
Repentance there was granted, as faith sprang forth from hearts
For eight or nine adults and children, a new beginning starts
But let us not forget that one, at home God chose to keep
Was yet a testimony still at work, and rewards still able to reap
Neither shall we overlook, those who gave that some may go
Financial support got us there, but the prayers kept us afloat
Each one of you may not have gone, yet still had a part
In a mission trip that saw souls saved, as the Spirit worked in hearts
When coming home from such a time, I doubt we stay the same
I pray we take what God has shown us, and press on in Jesus name

Beloved Friend

From among the darkness, amidst the storm
Comes forth a light, with a steady arm
Held out toward me, reaching forth
Bidding me come, to find support
Afraid to trust, but grasp it still
Allowing myself, to acknowledge it’s real
An honest smile, with words of truth
A gentle spirit, to encourage and soothe
A faithful friend, where charity dwells
Able to believe, my heart made well
Truly amazing, to find such a one
A caring soul, when life seems undone
Words of wisdom, acts of grace
Deeds of kindness, freely displayed
Sharing love, and giving hope
A joy from within, they promote
Selfless thought, my spirit mends
Forever dear, my Beloved Friend

Faith is Risen Anew (Letting Go, Part 2)

Fearful and shaking, awaiting death’s call
Alone and cold, curled in a ball
Memories of family, thoughts of friends
Tears in the eyes, awaiting the end
Hope all but lost, faith fading from sight
Defeat is admitted – Yet – out from the light
A man stands looking, with his arms held out
The child hears their name, as the man cries out
Startled with unbelief, a dream it must be
A familiar face, comes before the child to see
My child I have found you, after seeking so long
Come unto me, so I may take you home
A groaning in the flesh, appeals it’s not true
But from the spirit comes belief, Faith is Risen Anew
The heart begins to patter, as a new born babe
Arms reach out to embrace, the one who’s come to save
Cold and hungry, thirsty and weak
The man lifts up the child, and kisses the cheek
“Take this bread, and water I give
It will nourish your soul, and let you live
Also this set, of new clean clothes
To replace your garment, that is full of holes”
Tears fill the child’s eyes, as the man just smiles
“Come with me now, we must travel many miles”
Carried by the man, all burdens are lifted
Entering his arms, they seem to be shifted
All the worries and pains of this life
Seemed to be gone, and vanish from sight
Not deserved, but greatly loved
The power of a friend, from up above
Mercy and grace, with longsuffering
Love came from heaven, to heal the unclean
Prayers are answered, salvation is claimed
The blind and deaf, are healed and changed
From the bonds of Satan, to the cross of Christ
Brought from the darkness, into the light
Family reunited, true friends revealed
A new understanding, that God’s Word is real
Never forgetting, from where they have come
To remind them forever, of what God has done

Letting Go (Part 1)

Lost and so afraid, a child sits all alone
In the pouring rain, far away from home
No dad – No mom – Only clinging to one’s self
Barely holding on to life, so very close to death
The body tired and so worn out, unhappy and distressed
Not even strength enough to move, a struggle for each breath
Eyes closed shut from pure exhaustion, head so full of pain
Arms marked up with tracks of needles, clothes are torn and stained

It really wasn’t long ago, that things were not this way
A warm and loving family and home cooked meals each day
Rebellion came within the child, to make a dare decision
More was waiting out there for them; to leave home was their mission
Dad and mom didn’t understand, and neither did the preacher
The world would gladly welcome them, so who needed schools and teachers
Plenty of others had gone before, and gladly showed the way
For through the words of longtime friends, a soul was led astray

So now it’s come to this – hungry, cold, and afraid
For where have all the friends gone to – some moved, some passed away
The joy of freedom, where is it – which once was solely sought
Has disappeared without a trace, and seems all hope is lost
How a touch or familiar voice, is anxiously awaited
The faintest hope, a desperate wish, with family to be reacquainted
If only they could see them now, surely they would know
They wish that they had clung before, instead of Letting Go.

Christ Bore the Cross

To the hill of Golgotha, Christ bore the cross
The Lord and Savior, humbly walked
With a crown of thorns, upon his brow
Submitting to God's will, he carried it out
The people stared and laughed at him, as he walked by
They cursed and spat upon his face, as he looked them in the eye
Blood poured down from wounds, for he was beaten by cruel men
Barely able to be recognized, he was the only man innocent
Though some believed most did not, this was the King of kings
The Son of God, the Savior, the creator of all things
If they had known or understood, they may have accepted Christ
But it was written before time, for our sins he must die
Nails drove in his hands and feet, a spear thrust through his side
Yet looking over all the people, "Forgive them" still he cried
Rejected by man and forsaken by God, Christ hung upon the tree
But through it all a man got saved, he was one of two thieves
There also stood a soldier man, that claimed "Truly he must be"
The Son of God he recognized, for God had opened his eyes to see
To fight the power of death and hell, the Savior had to die
To cleanse our soul to take our blame, the Lord was crucified
By sending the Holy Spirit, to indwell us here on earth
A promise to work in our being, till death from our new birth
Kept by the power of God, sealed by the Holy Spirit
Bought with the blood of Jesus Christ, we'll see when he appeareth
Sometimes we take for granted, the salvation we've been given
For what have we lost to receive it, yet Christ had to leave heaven
God could have destroyed us in the garden, or in the flood of Noah's day
Slew the people at the tower of Babel, or ended it all another way
But thanks to his mercy and his grace, he had a plan for his creation
Christ knew he would walk the way of the cross, before he laid the foundation
What love of the Savior we have been given, freely without merit
God knew we would sin and made provision, and through his Son he gave it
Through the choice of man, sin has come in and cursed the human race
By the choice of Christ, he has paid the price to save us by God's grace
So when pride comes in and you're lifted up, believing you have attained
Remember salvation is a gift of God, and it was your sin why Christ was slain

Lame Chrisitan Excuses

Dear Lord...

I want to do your work, But I just don't have the time.
I believe in supporting missions, But Lord, this money's mine;
And besides, I gave last time.

I know that I should study, To show myself approved;
But Lord, you know -- I'll never know as much as you.

I know that I should speak, And teach from your Holy Book,
But Lord you don't understand...I just can't take those dirty looks.

I know that you have told us...Where the Spirit leads we should go.
And I will Lord...
Just give me a moment -- To finish watching my favorite show.

I know that I should witness, And pass out tracts on the street;
But I get sick walking in the snow or rain, And dizzy working in the heat.

I know you said we should pray...We are to pray without ceasing;
But where is the time Lord -- Between my work, play, and sleeping?

Dear Lord...

I must admit -- The church seems, oh, so try.
That's why I don't always make it, To the services all the time.

Dear Lord...

I do pray for your return; For I know your words are true.
I will gladly serve you there in Heaven,
You know I will...
Unless there's someting else for me to do.

Souls

A lonely girl walks alone, so far away from home
In the shadows of the lights, she’s a walker of the night
Searching for the souls that come her way

There he stands, the desperate man
With a life within his grip, with a cursing hatred lip
Waiting for the souls that he may slay

The teenagers on their way, new discoveries every day
Rebelling from authority, falling from morality
So quickly are their souls led astray

Parents forget their job, Police can’t control the mobs
Children running to and fro, No one knows which way to go
The souls themselves are filled with much dismay

Then shines in a glorious Light, through the power of His might
From the darkness gives them sight, by the blood of Jesus Christ
Souls are made alive by His ray

If we want the world to change, hearts must be rearranged
Put our faith in Christ alone, the Word of God read in the home
Our souls can live for God if we pray

Standing firm to what is true, always willing His Will to do
Never question but pressing on, praising God in our songs
Our souls shall not faultier, fail, or sway

If we truly trust in Christ, we will obey and do what’s right
Study that we may know, the precious Word that we may grow
And show it to the souls that come our way

Come to Him today! Believe on Him with faith!
Trust and obey! He will save you by His grace!

A Call to Missions

Written For: Mark and Sabrina Holmes

A man comes forth to the alter of the Lord
His heart being touched by the power of the Sword
The inward calling is as sure as can be
The Spirit calls out - he replies “Send me”

As the Holy Spirit speaks a lady commits
To the calling of the Lord she gladly submits
Trusting her husband to follow the Word of God
And trusting Christ to lead them where to trod

The man of God and his virtuous help meet
Bow to the Lord and kneel at his feet
Accept the calling as a blessing from heaven
To be ambassadors for Christ to preach against leaven

In view of the calling they must leave family and friends
Even their native land to go where God sends
But they know in their hearts this is a small price to pay
To a Savior that has freely washed their sins away

To go to a lost people that thirst and hunger
To a land of dark souls that fall and slumber
With the Word of God to bring them the Light
To remove the scales off their eyes and renew their sight

To pierce through their hearts with the Sword of the Spirit
To give the call of salvation to all that will hear it
To share with them the truth of their Master and King
They have decided to trust God through all sufferings

They see the harvest through the eyes of Christ
Working through the tares to reach the wheat that is white
Praying without ceasing, through fasting and tears
Seeing God work miracles to prove that he hears

Through support of the churches and Christians they’ve met
They reach the field with their minds fully set
All of their faith must be in Christ alone
As they work in his field till he gathers them home

Whether taken in the rapture or through death they meet
They shall receive rewards for service, at the judgment seat
By being faithful to the calling and trusting in the Son
They become an example to others, in Christ, it can be done

Don’t Wait On Me

O Lord, I am lost and dark within
Separated from you and stained with sin
In bondage, I am, to “the prince of the power of the air”
My whole being corrupt and full of despair

My flesh is wicked with a mind of deceit
A tongue of slander and mischievous feet
Eyes of desire and hands of malice
A spirit that is dead and a heart that is callus

As quick as it’s heard, the seed is erased
Satan replaces the Word, puts lies in its place
Through “the lust of the flesh” and “the lust of the eyes”
Through “the pride of life”, the Truth is despised

A wonderer in darkness, yet with lights all around
I stumble and fall mist the thoughts of the proud
The Truth is so close, yet just out of reach
For I cling to my sin and not what is preached

O Lord, I ask you to send me the Light
Awaken my soul and cleanse me white
The vile and wicked sinner you see
Take control of my life, and Don’t Wait on Me!

Send your Spirit and pierce through my heart
Dwell in my being, inhabit each part
Crush my will with thy tender hand
Destroy my old self, create a new man

Fill my mind with the Words of your Book
Guide my eyes to where they should look
Move my feet through the paths I should go
Soften my heart for the compassion of souls

Chasten me Lord when I go astray
To deny the flesh and follow your Way
Put a hedge about me, from evil to keep
Fit me with the armor prepared for your sheep

You are my life line, without you I die
Send me revival everyday of my life
Keep me humble upon bended knee
Take control of my life, and Don’t Wait on Me!

They Say I Killed My Baby

Reference: A little boy my grandmother babysat, 2006

Dazed and confused, standing across from the man at the desk
Blinded by lights, and holding a board with numbers up to my chest
Trying to piece it all together, feeling a little crazy
The man spoke out in anger, told me I killed my baby

With shock and disbelief, I said this is not so
For I had picked him up from school, to home I wanted to go
My precious little baby, I placed inside the seat
Buckled him up and checked it twice, and kissed him on the cheek
We were about to arrive at home, when a policeman came from behind
Why I am here, I haven’t a clue; I didn’t run any light or stop sign
Where is my baby, can you tell me that, he must be scared without me
I’m sure he has stories he wants to tell and crafts he wants me to see
Yes, I hear what you are saying, but to my mind it doesn’t seem clear
Please tell me once again, go slow, so my thoughts do not smear

Dear lady, I’m afraid it’s true, what I am about to say
I understand in your condition, it may not seem that way
You were on your way to school, to bring your son to class
True he was buckled in his seat, but you had drink in your glass
You dipped a little off the road, and jerked to make correction
You crossed the lanes and hit a tree, for your son there was no protection
Instantly your son was taken, there was nothing they could do
When help arrived, they found you drunk, what I say is true
I’m sorry, but you are guilty, when you are sober you will know
You traded the life of your little baby, for the alcohol you chose

I can’t believe it, it can’t be true, I would never hurt my child
I can’t even remember a single moment, did I really act so wild
Still confused, with no recollection, my baby must be alive
With no memory, but the words of others, they lock me up inside

They buried my boy today, but me, I could not go
I’m sober now and must believe, although I did not know
If I close my eyes, I can almost see his face
A smile when he was born, but all other memories erased
You know what’s worse than losing my baby, especially as they say
I can’t tell him I’m sorry or take it back, I don’t even remember that day
Forever this will be a blur, I may never comprehend
How I ever became a drunkard, and took the life of my baby in the end
Who will ever forgive me, how can I forgive myself at all
My baby was all I had that was good, and I traded him for alcohol

Perspective

Reference: Natalee Holloway, Missing in Aruba, May 30, 2005.

A young girl comes up missing, in a foreign land
There are those of us who could care less, and those that lend a hand

A momma’s crying, and a daddy weeps
And praying people, fall to their knees
To talk to God about, one lost soul

Yet across the miles sit those that judge, she deserves what she got
She shouldn’t have been there or did what she did, they use words that hurt a lot
To a parent that has lost, a soul

Perspective moves our emotions, and causes us to think
For one thing or against another, it can drive us to the brink
To the edge of hatred or the line of love, it can pull us across
We can judge another with curse or praise, without even a cause

We sit in comfort as we talk about, things that happen to another
Would we be so cold or so ambitious, if it were our sister or brother
Would we call them a sinner, or saint out loud

Do any of us deserve any better, for decisions we’ve made in our lives
Have we lost all compassion for one another, is selfishness on the rise
Would you care if someone tells, your sins to the crowd

Perspective is how we see things, that someone may see different
It forces us to speak our thoughts, it can cause union or division
To love your neighbor as yourself, makes us take a deeper look
For what would we want others to say, if our life were an open book

Does the murdered deserve death, what of the woman that’s been raped
What about the child that’s missing, because someone decided to take
What could he’d done that couldn’t be forgiven, why take what she wanted to keep
The child might have said they would run away, but now they’re out of reach

Perspective without knowledge, with no wisdom within sight
We speak our mind without repercussions, because we think that we are right
Not caring about those it hurts, or whether it is valid
Remember one day it could involve you, don’t let your heart grow callused

A young girl comes up missing, in your neighborhood
Would you just sit there and say she deserved it, or help find her if you could?

John Bunyan

To be saved is to be preserved in the faith to the end. 'He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.' (Mt. 24:13) Not that perseverance is an accident in Christianity, or a thing performed by human industry; they that are saved 'are kept by the power of God, through faith unto salvation.' (1 Pet. 1: 3-6) But perseverance is absolutely necessary to the complete saving of the soul…. He that goeth to sea with a purpose to arrive at Spain, cannot arrive there if he be drowned by the way; wherefore perseverance is absolutely necessary to the saving of the soul.
